How To Make Yourself More Visible on a Motorcycle

One of the most difficult things about driving a motorcycle is the other people on the road. You may be following all the rules and doing just what you’re supposed to do and still have an accident because some dimwit in a car "didn’t see you there." You can’t do too much about other drivers, but you can make yourself more visible so that at least they can’t argue that they didn’t see you. Never assume other drivers can see you. You have to make yourself be seen.

The Gear To Be Seen In

The easiest way to stand out on the road is to wear bright colors. In a world of concrete gray, stand out by wearing fluorescent colors like bright green or yellow. If you ride at night, you’ll have to work extra hard to stand out in the dark. You can put reflective tape, patches or strips on your jacket, pants, helmet or backpack. They’ll light up when hit by the light of headlights. Consider a white helmet or other highly visible color to make you stand out a bit. Create biomotion by attaching reflective materials to your ankles and feet. The human eye is attracted to movement and this will draw more attention. Make sure all the lights on your motorcycle including taillight and headlights are in working order. Consider upgrading to LED. Refective rim tape will make you more visible from the side. You may want to try a helmet-mounted brake and turn signal light for greater visibility.
