When riding season winds down, storing your motorcycle properly can help protect it from damage and make it easier to get back on the road once warmer weather returns. A few simple maintenance and storage steps can go a long way toward keeping your bike in great shape through the winter.

Clean and Maintain Your Motorcycle

Start with a thorough cleaning, and make sure it’s completely dry before storage. Dirt, moisture, and road salt left on the bike for an extended period can contribute to corrosion. Check your owner’s manual for recommended maintenance, and consider changing the oil and filter beforehand if they’re due.

Fill the fuel tank and add a fuel stabilizer according to the manufacturer’s directions, then run the engine long enough for the treated fuel to circulate through the system.

Protect the Battery and Tires

Motorcycle batteries can lose their charge during extended storage. Remove the battery if your manufacturer recommends it, and store it in a suitable location, or use a battery maintainer designed for long-term storage. Check tire pressure and inflate to the recommended levels, and use a motorcycle stand if possible to reduce prolonged pressure on the tires.

Choose the Right Storage Spot

Store your motorcycle somewhere dry and secure, away from extreme temperature swings. A breathable motorcycle cover is a better choice than a plastic tarp, which can trap moisture underneath. Before your first ride in the spring, inspect the tires, brakes, fluids, battery, and lights to make sure everything’s road-ready.
